V methyl cellulose were prepared in 35 mm culture dish. The lower layer contained haemopoietic growth factors and the serum from either the three treated animal groups or the untreated mice at a concentration of 10% v v. This was overlayered with methyl cellulose containing 2 x 105 mouse bone marrow mononuclear cells ml. The dishes were incubated at 37 o 5%CO 2 atmosphere. Colony Forming Units - Granulocyte Macrophage CFU-GM ; were counted on day 7 using a compound microscope. The colony count in the untreated animals was nil. The colony count in animals treated with 2.5 mg kg, 5 mg kg and 10 mg kg was 12 + 4.58, 99 + 12.53, 185 + 10.69 respectively. The serum from the mice treated with Lawsone 2.5, 5 and 10 mg kg ; stimulated granulocyte macrophage colony formation as indicated by the increased number of CFU - GM. The results of this study indicate that Lawsone primarily activates the macrophages which in turn secrete cytokines like GM-CSF which ultimately stimulate the for mation of neutrophils and monocytes. Thus the immunomodulatory effect of Lawsone could be due to the activation of macrophages and the stimulation of secretion of GM-CSF. 264. IMMUNOMODULATORY ACTIVITY OF DEODARA ROXB. ; LOUD. WOOD OIL. Emile also discussed the recent discovery that there are two email communication systems in use by the Section: 1 ; the two-way email discussion list set up and managed by Steve Nipper, past Section Chair; and 2 ; the one-way email distribution list administered by the Bar. Emile reported several instances in which Section members have not received the items sent by System 1, and that Steve needs to update that System at least 3x per year to keep its email addresses aligned with those of the Bar's roster of IP Section members. Although the Section acknowledges Steven's excellent contributions and continued commitment to the Section, it decided that these systems were essentially duplicative and that the Section should utilize the Bar-administered system. Emile will work with the Bar's representatives and Steve to get this accomplished. The Section agreed with Emile's proposed summer meeting schedule, in light of the Bar's Annual Meeting in July and of member's vacations. There will be a Section meeting in June, but no Section meetings in July or August. Section meetings will begin again in September, specifically on September 21, 2006 with CLE presented by Brad Frazer on software IP issues. Shane and Peter gave a brief update on the CLE sessions and the Annual Meeting. CLE speakers are scheduled through January of 2007. Its business concluded, the Section meeting was adjourned. Who I? I imagine most readers know me as the author of The Ketogenic Diet, which is more or less considered to be the be-all, end-all book on low-carbohydrate dieting. Fewer readers seem to be aware of my second book, which dealt with the drug Bromocriptine. If you've read either book, you'll have a better background to understand the information in this book. If not, don't worry, I'll try to give you enough background to understand the UD2. To be honest, to give the rationale for everything in detail would take more pages than I want to take. I'm going to cover the basics and you'll just have to take my word for the rest and leuprolide.
SUMMARY One major constraint to plantain production in Cte d'Ivoire, is the lack of planting material. Traditionally, plantain producers use the main trunk of the plant. In recent years, attention has been given to so-called type b suckers at the base of the main trunk. Stimulated with growth hormones under special conditions, they have proved to be very good planting material. Thus phenoxyacetic acid PAA ; and its analogues 3, 4-D ; , 3, 5-D ; and 2, 4-MPA ; were used to treat 247 type b suckers which were stimulated for 16 days and transferred to the field for agronomic observations. A NewmanKeuls's test was applied to the results to determine the level of significance of the activity of the growth hormones used. Mean plantain yields were compared to evaluate significant differences between them. Banana bunch weight differed significantly with treatments. The 2, 4-MPA treatment gave the highest banana bunch weight, while the 3, 4-D treatment recorded the lowest weight. The lowest pulp weight was recored with 3, 4-D P2 200 g ; while the highest pulp weight was obtained with 2, 4-MPA P5 200 g ; where P2 represents the pulp of median finger of the second hand and P5 is the pulp of the median finger of the fifth hand. Preconditioned type b suckers appear to be a safe and a homogeneous planting material. Using them may lead to an improvement in plantain yield. As far as beneficial effects of growth hormones on plantain are concerned, hormones tested stimulated growth in the following increasing order: 3, 5-D 2.

It is a radiopharmaceutical precursor solution intended for the radiolabelling of carrier molecules. EMEA review began on 22 October 2001 and the opinion was adopted on 21 November 2002, with an active review time of 176 days. A summary of these opinions is available on the EMEA web site: : emea .int The Committee also gave positive opinions for a number of new indications for already authorised medicinal products, including: Extension of the indication for Caspofungin MSD caspofungin ; from Merck Sharp & Dohme to include treatment of invasive candidiasis in non-neutropenic adult patients. Caspofungin MSD was first authorised in the European Union in October 2001. The referral was not initiated as a result of any established safety or efficacy concern with this product and levetiracetam. H2O2 ; , OONO- and lipid peroxides by the action of glutathione peroxidases. Because glutathione is the major intracellular antioxidant defense within the cells, we propose that its depletion might be a prerequisite for the generation of ROS that could potentially modulate the apoptotic machinery. We show that inhibition of GSH depletion by either high extracellular GSH or NAC abolishes the increase in ROS formation. Moreover, we observed a tight link between GSH transport and ROS formation because ROS generation was stimulated by MK571 a potent stimulator of GSH efflux during FasL-induced apoptosis 13 ; . The role of ROS in the progression of the cell death program induced by FasL is controversial. While previous studies suggested a role of ROS in apoptosis 22-24 ; , contradictory results have also been described 27, 28, 69-71 ; . Previous reports have studied the role of one particular ROS in apoptosis; however the formation or even scavenging of one ROS can potentially lead to the generation of others by different reactions. FasL-mediated apoptosis has been reported to induce the generation of H2O2 20, 22, 24-26, ; , O2- 22, 23, 73-78 ; . OH 25 ; , NO and lipid peroxides 80, 81 ; . During apoptosis, O2- has been specifically shown to be formed due to a switch from 4-electron reduction of O2 to 1-electron reduction 7, 82 ; . Superoxide anion can be subsequently converted to H2O2 or 1 O2, by non-enzymatic reactions. Furthermore, O2can be derived enzymatically to H2O2 from its dismutation by SOD. Reaction of H2O2 with O2- in the presence of iron can further produce OH by Fenton-type reactions 83 ; . Hydroxyl radical can trigger a chain of peroxidation reactions by subtracting allylic hydrogen atoms from proximal unsaturated lipids 84 ; , which is highly toxic to the cell because a single ROS can generate a number of toxicants due to the autocatalytic propagation of lipid peroxidation reactions. We observed an example of this interrelationship of one ROS generation with others when in the presence of the SOD mimic MnTE-e-PyP, which prevents O2formation upon Fas stimulation, H2O2 formation was enhanced as a byproduct of O2- dismutation data not shown ; . We took an integrative approach by analyzing the role of several reactive species in apoptosis, by the use of several antioxidants alone or in conjunction. Scavenging of H2O2, O2-, OH. Drugs, 14"18 no adverse effects of any nature on the suckling infant have been reported, and standard maternal doses yielded very low 3-blocker concentrations in the milk. Other sympathetic inhibitors and vasodilators may be safe for use during lactation, but the data are so sparse that general recommendations regarding these antihypertensive agents are not possible at this time. Finally, in lactating patients with severe or accelerated hypertension, captopril seems to be an agent that may be safely administered in the usual therapeutic doses and levonorgestrel. 6. Articles by Dr. ChoonW. Yong, Pathologist, Prairie DiagnosticServices, Regina Following euthanasia, a 4 to5-year old Thoroughbred gelding was submitted for necropsy. The animal had resided on a White City farm along with 18 other horses and 14 cattle for one year prior to becoming ill. Clinical Signs The appearanceof clinical signs and the horse~sphysical deterioration could be descnbed as acute -slightly over 24 hours from discovery of the first clinical signs to euth~asia. The horse did not finish his hay the mght before and was subsequently found to have lost the use of his back legs. He appearedto have severe back pain. Blood che; ~stry showed no abn?~aiities. The practItIOner suspectedback Injury, possibly protozoal myelitis. Other than hind limb weakness and associated muscle pain, other CNS signs were absent. The geldin~ continued to deteriorate and was euthanlzed. Necropsy Examination No gross lesions were noted in any visceral organs. There was no muscle bruising or hemorrhage. The posterior .rortion of the spinal column, from the 15 thoracic vertebra to the tail head was removed and split sagitally to check for vertebral Equine abortion caused fractures, hemorrhage, abscessation and tumors involving the spinal cord. The only lesions noted involved the cauda equina, which appeared to contain excessive amounts of cloudy yellowish fluid and grey-black meninges. The brain appeared normal. Histopathology Extensive non-suppurative myelitis involved all cauda equina sections. Anterior sections were less severely affected. Classical neuronal Negri bodies were not evident, but there were multiple cytoplasmic clumps of grey-purple material present in some neurons that varied from granular to linear in shape. Only one brain section out of more than 20 had mild and focal perivascular cuffing and minor, focal gliosis. No protozoal parasites, including Sarcocystis neurona, were detected in spinal cord and brain sections. Bacteriology was negative. Virology Brain tissue was submitted to ADRI Lethbridge for rabies FA examinatio'n, which proved negative. Subse9uent to negative FA results, two formalized fixed spinal cord sections were submitted for rabies and Sarcocystis neurona immunohistochemistry. Using both polyclonal rabbit antisera and monoclonal antibody supplied by ADRI, Dr. Keith West PDS, Saskatoon ; found positive IHC stains indicative of rabies virus. Comment Hind limb weakness of sudden onset, perhaps muscle pain, with no classical CNS signs indicating rabies was somewhat confusing. While the non-suppurative myelitis involving the cauda equina suggested a viral etiology like rabies, the apparent lack of anterior progression of spinal lesions and almost normal brain sections were somewhat perplexing. Negative FA results at a Federal rabies lab did little to clarify this diagnostic challenge. Perhaps the typical ascent of rabies virus from a hind leg wound was still in its early stage and why lesions were confined to the cauda equina. It would also help explain the negative FA on brain tissue. Additional tests on brain tissue and IHC staining of fixed formalized spinal cord led to the conclusion that the horse was, in fact, rabid and lexiva. I remembered it because we were specifically told to not mix lantus with any other insulins. Including NPY. After DPP IV CD26 activity, NPY becomes an angiogenic factor ZukowskaGoric et al., 1998 ; . Likewise it is hypothetised that the DPP IV processing of the peptides MK27 and SR-17 may be part of a physiological mechanism that modulates their biological activity as potential immunomodulators Depreitere et al., in preparation a + b ; Immunohistochemical analysis of porcine spleen sections revealed the presence of both the MK-27 and SR-17 sequence peptide exclusively in nerve terminals localised in the reticuloendothelial compartment lining the Billroth cords, in the trabeculae, and in the vessel wall of central arteries. Immunoreactivity was also seen in the larger branches of the splenic nerve. In contrast, pancreastatin a chromogranin A fragment ; imunostaining could not be detected in nerves or nerve endings but was localised in specific subsets of leukocytes in the white pulp and red pulp. This interesting observation was confirmed by in-situ hybridisation in collaboration with Dr. L. Arckens & Prof. Dr. F. Vandesande, K.U.L. ; , implying that the observed pancreastatin immunoreactivity in these bleukocytes was indeed produced by these cells and was not the result of an uptake process of chromogranin originating from other sources. GN-17 pCgA292-308 ; is a new peptide derived from CgA, located in the middle part of the molecule. It shares a similar concensus motif with many substrates of protein kinase II. Preliminary results confirm that this peptide inhibits in a dose-dependently way the casein kinase II CKII ; activity, whereas peptide WE-14, used as a negative control, has no effect. The mechanism of inhibition remains to be further investigated. The interesting part is that this CKIIlike activity has been found on the cell surface of both T-lymphocytes and mast cells and that phosphorylation sites of CKII are present on the T-cell receptor. This may be suggestive for a modulating action of GN-17 on T-lymphocyte function. We also compared the antibacterial activity against Micrococcus luteus of the lysate of porcine and bovine chromaffin granules. In the bovine adrenal medulla, antibacterial activity was found; this is in accordance with the known antibacterial activity of bovine secretolytin. No activity against Micrococcus luteus was found in porcine chromaffin granule extracts, nor in preparations of the pure synthetic porcine secretolytin-like peptide KR-11. We therefore conclude that the secretolytin-like peptide KR-11 does not possess antibacterial activity. This activity is probably situated in the C-terminal part of secretolytin, where KR-11 differs in one amino acid from the real bovine ; secretolytin. In conclusion : Several new peptides derived from CgB and one from CgA have been identified in porcine chromaffin granules and some functional properties could be establised. Two of them are good substrates for DPP IV CD26 and another one is an inhibitor of the CKII activity. Three of them are released from the splenic nerve after electrical stimulation. In turn activate the Smad pathway for an enhanced Smad2 nuclear localization and increased furin expression. Also, since nuclear translocation of the Smad3 proteins was shown to occur through direct binding to the nuclear transporter importin 60 ; , it would be tempting to speculate that the increase in Smad nuclear translocation comes from direct or indirect modification by activated MEK p42 p44 kinases of proteins involved in Smad nuclear transport. In this regard, phosphorylation of the importin 58 97 heterodimer by activated CK2 kinases was shown to increase its affinity of the ligand , leading to enhanced nuclear transport of the complex 61. Currently there is no generic lantus on the market and however brand name is usually at a cheap price when ordered from a canadian pharmacy.
