GM-CSF 50 ng mL ; -activated U937 cells were incubated with a 10-fold excess of green fluorescent apoptotic Jurkat cells for 60 min. EB was added at the final concentration of 0.5 g mL. After washing, cells were either analyzed by flow cytometry see above ; or fixed in 4% wt vol ; paraformaldehyde and permeabilized with 0.5% wt vol ; saponin. Morphology was revealed using reflection interference contrast, as described [15]. Cells were visualized by a Leica TCS-NT Leica Microsystems, Heidelberg, Germany ; confocal laser scanning microscope, equipped with laser argon krypton, 75 mW multiline. Focal series of horizontal planes of section were simultaneously monitored for FITC and EB, using the 488- and 568-nm laser lines, a band pass 590 30 filter and a long-pass filter 590. Micrographs were visualized and printed as reported previously [27].

CMS is proposing that an entity that owns a DHS entity "stands in the shoes" of the DHS entity. Thus, if a hospital owns an entity that contracts with a physician, it would be as if the hospital contracts with the physician. CMS implies that in Phase III it has finalized a rule that a physician stands in the shoes of his her group practice. It is not clear if the physician would stand in the shoes of another entity in which the physician invests. If adopted, physicians may be able to use a wider range of exceptions. Caution -- we are inferring this from the proposed rule and need to see the final Stark II Phase III rule and vytorin.

For the 5F- and 6F-analogs in Figs. 6 and 7. The table gives the 50-mV conductance, relative to the gA 50-mV conductance, for the eight analogs in both lipids at low 0.1 M ; and high 2.0 M ; KCl. Figs. 6 and 7 demonstrate shifts in superlinearity due to fluorination for both lipids at moderate 0.5 M ; and high 2.0 M ; KCl. Table 1 shows that the changes in single-channel current because of fluorination were small but consistent. In DPhPC bilayers, all of the 5F-indole analogs of gA formed channels with larger singlechannel currents than native gA in both high and low [KCl], reaching a maximum 52% increase in 2 M. The SE of the conductance ratio, relative to gA, for these measurements is 0.1 Busath et al., 1998 ; , so the uncertainty in the hypothesis that fluorination can enhance conductance is insignificant p 0.05 ; . In GMO bilayers, the 5F-indole peptides had essentially the same single-channel currents as gA in 0.1 M KCl and a modest increase in conductance in 2.0 M KCl, averaging 8%. In DPhPC bilayers, all of the 6F-Trp analogs formed channels with smaller single-channel currents than gA in low [KCl] 3% average decrease ; but.

The 0.0375 mg dose was superior to placebo in reducing both the frequency and severity of vasomotor symptoms at Week 4 and maintained efficacy through Weeks 8 and 12 of treatment. All doses of Vivelle 0.0375 mg, 0.05 mg, 0.075 mg, and 0.1 mg ; are effective for the control of vasomotor symptoms. Effects on bone mineral density Efficacy and safety of Vivelle in the prevention of postmenopausal osteoporosis have been studied in a 2-year double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled, parallel group study. A total of 261 hysterectomized 161 ; and non-hysterectomized 100 ; , surgically or naturally menopausal women within 5 years of menopause ; , with no evidence of osteoporosis lumbar spine bone mineral density within 2 standard deviations of average peak bone mass, i.e., 0.827 g cm2 ; were enrolled in this study; 194 patients were randomized to one of the four doses of Vivelle 0.1, 0.05, 0.0375, or 0.025 mg day ; and 67 patients to placebo. Over 2 years, study systems were applied to the buttock or the abdomen twice a week. Non-hysterectomized women received oral medroxyprogesterone acetate 2.5 mg day ; throughout the study. The study population comprised naturally 82% ; or surgically 18% ; menopausal, hysterectomized 61% ; or non-hysterectomized 39% ; women with a mean age of 52.0 years range 27 to 62 years the mean duration of menopause was 31.7 months range 2 to 72 months ; . Two hundred thirty-two 89% ; of randomized subjects 173 on active drug, 59 on placebo ; contributed data to the analysis of percent change from baseline in bone mineral density BMD ; of the AP lumbar spine, the primary efficacy variable. Patients were given supplemental dietary calcium 1000 mg elemental calcium day ; but no supplemental vitamin D. There was an increase in BMD of the AP lumbar spine in all Vivelle dose groups; in contrast to this, a decrease in AP lumbar spine BMD was observed in placebo patients. All Vivelle doses were significantly superior to placebo p 0.05 ; at all time points with the exception of Vivelle 0.05 mg day at 6 months. The highest dose of Vivelle was superior to the three lower doses. There were no statistically significant differences in pairwise comparisons among the three lower doses. See Figure 3. ; Figure 3 Bone mineral density - AP Lumbar spine Least squares means of percentage change from baseline All randomized patients with at least one post-baseline assessment available with last post-baseline observation carried forward and acitretin and vivelle.
Computed technology SPECT ; scans, which permit noninvasive and improved detection and diagnosis of medical conditions. These imaging tools are proving invaluable in early diagnosis and treatment of heart disease, breast cancer, and neurological diseases. On the Horizon: Artificial retina and beyond: The DOE Sc. has been at the scientific forefront of neural prostheses, which can restore sight or movement to those stricken by illness or injury. An ongoing initiative engages DOE national laboratories, universities and the private sector to research and develop an artificial retina that can restore sight in blind patients with macular degeneration, retinitis pigmentosa and other eye diseases. The technology that is being developed in the DOE Artificial Retina Project may be applied not only to the treatment of blindness but in the general field of neural prostheses. It may be adapted to help persons with spinal cord injuries, Parkinson's disease, deafness and almost any other neurological disorder. In addition, the DOE Sc.-supported Neural Matrix, initially designed to help scientists learn how neurons in the human nervous system communicate, is the first step in creating combined biological and electronic chip implants that can provide neural networks of interconnected nerve cells for testing drugs and sensing toxins for homeland security and, someday, restoring the use of limbs, eyesight and improved mental functions in patients. Less toxic bone marrow transplantation procedures: DOE Sc.-funded researchers at the University of Washington and the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Institute are developing targeted approaches to deliver alphaemitting radionuclides to specific T cell populations that are responsible for graft rejection. Use of these approaches will reduce the toxicity associated with standard transplantation approaches, which in turn will allow procedures to be given to a much wider range of patients.
INTRODUCTION The purpose of this notice is to provide guidance as to how the Commission interprets Article 3 of Council Regulation EEC ; No 4064 891 as last amended by Regulation EC ; No 1310 972 hereinafter referred to as the Merger Regulation ; in relation to joint ventures3. This Notice replaces the Notice on the distinction between concentrative and cooperative joint ventures. Changes made in this Notice reflect the amendments made to the Merger Regulation as well as the experience gained by the Commission in applying the Merger Regulation since its entry into force on 21 September 1990. The principles set out in this Notice will be followed and further developed by the Commission's practice in individual cases. Under the Community competition rules, joint ventures are undertakings which are jointly controlled by two or more other undertakings4. In practice joint ventures encompass a broad range of operations, from merger-like operations to cooperation for particular functions such as R&D, production or distribution. Joint ventures fall within the scope of the Merger Regulation if they meet the requirements of a concentration set out in Article 3 thereof. According to recital 23 to Council Regulation EEC ; No 4064 89 it is appropriate to define the concept of concentration in such a manner as to cover only operations bringing about a lasting change in the structure of the undertakings concerned. The structural changes brought about by concentrations frequently reflect a dynamic process of restructuring in the markets concerned. They are permitted under the Merger Regulation unless they result in serious damage to the structure of competition by creating or strengthening a dominant position. The Merger Regulation deals with the concept of full-function joint ventures in Article 3 2 ; as follows and actimmune.
Former Queen's Chancellor the Honourable Peter Lougheed said that in the future, water will be more important to Albertans than oil and gas. Over the last year, this prediction has all but come true. With recent and pending closures of river basins to new licences, industry and communities are scrambling to secure water supplies for their future growth. The regulatory system has not kept up with the demands of this new reality and uncertainty reigns with huge implications for Alberta and Canada. However, uncertainty also brings new business opportunities, and the technical solutions being developed and implemented to deal with water shortages are innovative and exciting. Some of these breakthrough developments will be reviewed and the regulatory, policy, and implementation challenges discussed. Lecture hosted by the Department of Civil Engineering.

BAR ADMINISTRATION AND THE RETIREMENT OF EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR DAVID BREMNER The work of Bar members is supported by the Executive Director and the staff of the Bar Administration. David Bremner has been our Executive Director since April 1997. He announced his intention to retire at the end of June this year, but generously agreed to continue until our new Executive Director, Christine Harvey, is able to begin. David will be greatly missed. His work has been exemplary. His keen intelligence and analytical skills, his unflappable calm, his encyclopaedic memory, his sensitivity to nuance and detail, and his tireless and selfless industry have served the Bar well. In Bar Council deliberations, he is not intrusive; but in responding to questions, or in very occasionally volunteering information, he is brief, balanced and to the point. On the Law Council Committee of constituent body administrators, he has effectively represented the Victorian Bar and served the wider profession. David brought a new level of professionalism to Bar administration and Bar finances which he manages with the able assistance of Mal De Silva ; , particularly in the introduction of forward financial planning. He also provided valuable insights and support to the Chairman and Board of Barristers Chambers Limited in returning BCL to a sound financial footing. Recent projects in which he has distinguished himself include the Bar's 9.

Bill loved his work. He loved the children he taught and nurtured through the tumultuous years of early adolescence. It is a special gift in anyone to have the patience, humor, and sensitivity to deal with that peculiar time in children's lives as they pass from childhood to early adulthood. He did it with a gentleness and thoughtfulness that made him loved as well as respected by the students. From the day our daughter entered Fieldston as a seventh grader, I came to see in him that special care and love that marks a great teacher. I never doubted that she was in safe and strong hands. I never doubted that he would take care of her as he did of so many other children. --Joseph P. Healey head of school, colleague, and parent of a Fieldston graduate.

Enrolled amongst the fraternity, and is allotted a 'mort, ' or concubine; a barbarous festival ensues, at the conclusion of which an epithalamium is sung in the Gypsy language, as it is called in the work in question. Neither the epithalamium, however, nor the vocabulary, are written in the language of the English Gypsies, but in the 'Cant, ' or allegorical robber dialect, which is sufficient proof that the writer, however well acquainted with thieves in general, their customs and manners of life, was in respect to the Gypsies profoundly ignorant. His vocabulary, however, has been always accepted as the speech of the English Gypsies, whereas it is at most entitled to be considered as the peculiar speech of the thieves and vagabonds of his time. The cant of the present day, which, though it differs in some respects from the vocabulary already mentioned, is radically the same, is used not only by the thieves in town and country, but by the jockeys of the racecourse and the pugilists of the 'ring.' As a specimen of the cant of England, we shall take the liberty of quoting the epithalamium to which we have above alluded: 'Bing out, bien morts, and tour and tour Bing out, bien morts and tour; For all your duds are bing'd awast, The bien cove hath the loure. 78 ; 'I met a dell, I viewed her well, She was benship to my watch: So she and I did stall and cloy Whatever we could catch. 'This doxy dell can cut ben whids, And wap well for a win, And prig and cloy so benshiply, All daisy-ville within. 'The hoyle was up, we had good luck, In frost for and in snow; Men they did seek, then we did creep And plant the roughman's low.' It is scarcely necessary to say anything more upon the Germania in general or in particular; we believe that we have achieved the task which we marked out for ourselves, and have conveyed to our readers a clear and distinct idea of what it is. We have shown that it has been erroneously confounded with the Rommany, or Gitano language, with which it has nevertheless some points of similarity. The two languages are, at the present day, used for the same purpose, namely, to enable habitual breakers of the law to carry on their consultations with more secrecy and privacy than by the ordinary means. Yet it must not be forgotten that the thieves' jargon was invented for that purpose, whilst the Rommany, originally the proper and only speech of a particular nation, has been preserved from falling into entire disuse and oblivion, because adapted to.
